Introduction

Sleeping bags keep you warm at night. There, that's it. Let's keep it simple, buy a sleeping bag and never by cold again.

What, you want some more info??

Okay, a sleeping bag's main function is to slow down your heat loss. You supply the heat and the sleeping bag stops it escaping.. If you are cold or tired when you turn in for the night, you may not get very warm. There is no energy coming from you (I know how that feels most days...)

If the sleeping bag doesn't have enough insulation, you may still be cold. To get enough energy pumping out of you during the night all you have to do is eat a bit of grub before bo-boes, especially if it's cold. The correctly rated sleeping bag will do the rest.

Of course, in summer time it may be warm enough to sleep on top of your sleeping bag for most of the night. Please wear some jimjams though, nobody wants to see it.

An insulating pad underneath your sleeping bag is also a good idea. The ground can be cold and can drain away a lot of heat from your body. The squashed insulation of the sleeping bag will not be enough to keep this in. This is a must in winter.

Buying a Sleeping Bag

Firstly, it has to fit - make sure it's long enough and wide enough, otherwise at least one of your extremities is going to be sticking out and get nippy.

Next. it needs to be warm enough. Women in general need a sleeping bag which is 5C warmer than men. I don't know why. Philippa in our shop will take offence at this, but I'm not just making these figures up.

Also, older people may also need a warmer sleeping bag than people in the 20-40 age group. Hardened mountaineers are usually more comfortable at lower temperatures than a complete novice.

If you're having a romantic camping weekend with a partner who doesn't mind your stinky feet and your amorous advances, then you're on to a winner in more ways than one. Snuggling is the best way to keep warm. So buy a lesser rated sleeping bag, so the apple of your eye is cold... only kidding.

Finally, watch out for that sleeping bag zip. It's a big ouch if you get something caught and it's cold on your back in the middle of the night. Buy a sleeping bag with enough room to avoid the zip.
