Cheap Sleeping Bags
Gelert is one of the UK's favourite Family Camping Brands. They have been established for 30 years and provide cheap / great value for money performance products.
Our customers like to us the word cheap a lot. But cheap doesn't mean poor quality, especially where Gelert are concerned. A cheap sleeping bag still needs to slow down your heat loss effectively.
Traditionally down is used in sleeping bags for it's insulating properties. Down in not cheap (£100 - £200 upwards).
Gelert use synthetic fibres in all their sleeping bags which works out a lot cheaper. Synthetic sleeping bag fillings having a load of very fine fibres all tangled up which trap the warm air from your body and keep you warm. The filling itself is cheaper because it is made in 'volume'. The fabric used around a synthetic fill can also be cheap because it doesn't have to be such a tight weave to be "down-proof".
Apart from it producing a cheap sleeping bag, one great advantage of the good synthetics is that they can still provide warmth after getting wet. You squeeze the bag out, give it a good shake, and hope to dry it out some more with your body heat. Synthetic fibres dry more quickly than down.
Cheaper synthetic sleeping bags also can take a whole lot more abuse and washing than the down ones. The fibres are usually bonded together into a mat, and can take a lot of rough treatment.
